At various points along the math journey, every student learns the subcategories of the Real Number System. Here's a picture to help you understand it.

Algebra 2 students learn that there are also Imaginary Numbers. These are the way mathematicians represent the square roots of negative numbers.

There are some tricks to look out for!

For example, consider 9).

  • Because it is interchangeable with the number 3, it is considered a Natural number, Whole number, and an Integer.
  • Also, because it can be written as 3/1, it is also a Rational number.
  • However, it is not an Irrational number (because it is rational)
So if your teacher gives you a number and asks what kind of number it is, answer the question after determining what equivalent ways the original number can be written.
