Math Coaching began in 2010 when Tim
Isbell, Giang Lam, and Bruce DeBruhl met to consider the idea of
coaching math among under-resourced middle and high school students. Robin Isbell was also
part of the startup: she discovered the apartment complex, established
connections there, and encouraged us. For a season she led a sister program for elementary students. We got the actual coaching going
early in 2011. Below is a listing of our original startup team in that first
semester: Tim and Robin Isbell. Click the link for a bio. Giang Lam. A mechanical engineer for the aerospace industry. Received MS in Engineering from SJSU in 1993. Served as Sunday school teacher for high school students at New Life Church in Cupertino for many years. Been blessed with many good teachers and role models since youth. Believe that every kid, regardless of origins, has talents and potential to contribute if given opportunity to develop them through hard work. Bruce DeBruhl. Came to the Bay Area in 2009 to pursue his PhD. in Electrical Engineering at Carnagie-Mellon. Click the link for more about Bruce.Alexandra Estrada. When Math Coaching started, she was a Lynbrook High freshman, so she worked with our elementary group. At the time she was active writing fiction; working with horses at Garrod's Stables and teaching preschoolers at Open Door Presbyterian Church in Mountain View (a satellite of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church). In the summer of 2014 she coached an algebra 1 student and helped with an ESL project for some new immigrants. She's now on her way to college. Dorcas Hoi. When Math Coaching started, she was a Monta Visa High freshman, so she worked with our elementary group. She likes art and working with children. When Math Coaching started, she was a Lynbrook High junior. Loves working with younger kids and enjoys the active atmosphere. Plays competitive golf. Attends River of Life Church. Evelyn is now in the middle of her college years. |
